Freya Povey

Freya Povey (1945- ) is a ceramic artist and teacher who graduated from the South Australian School of Art in 1980 with a major in sculpture and took up an independent tenancy at Adelaide's Jam Factory. Influenced by the Skandaroovian Funk movement of the previous decade, in early works she used slabs and press mouldings to make stoneware human torsos with coiled kangaroo or cockatoo heads. These evolved into a series of hermaphroditic torsos and busts that explored gender roles using science fiction and punk art themes. Recent work includes Cozzie vases based on one-piece bathing costumes and double-eared koala mugs, cups, dishes and salt and pepper shakers. Work may be marked with an incised 'Freya S. Aust', F. Povey Adelaide' or 'F. Povey S. Australia' and she also used a painted 'F.P.' and a printed 'Freya Povey Australia' stamp.
