Maywald, Virginia

Virginia Maywald otained a Bachelor of Design (Ceramics) from the University of South Australia in 1982. After teaching at Underdale Campus, taking up a residency at Magill Campus, and joining a group of artists that toured country South Australia providing art workshops, she moved to the Meat Market Craft Centre in Melbourne. In 1987, time spent working part-time in a restaurant inspired her to design a platter for holding a whole Atlantic salmon. She and her cousin Tim Dolan went on to set up the Big Duck and Fish Co. to supply porcelain tableware to the hospitality industry. In 1994, they moved from their studio at Northcote Pottery to a larger factory in North Fitzroy, where they continued to operate until 2005. Works are signed 'Virginia Maywald' and may still have a printed paper label saying 'Made in Australia by the Big Duck and Fish Co'.
