Gunda

Gunda Gundars Zigurts Lusis (1928-1996) was born in Latvia. In 1944 he was evacuated with his parents, Arturs and Anna, to the Wentorf Displaced Persons Camp in Germany. In 1949 they immigrated to Australia. In 1956, after attending technical college in Melbourne, Lusis set up a pottery in the garage of his parent's home in Camberwell and started making a range of slip-cast earthenwares under the name 'Gunda'. The work produced by Lusis was strongly influenced by post-war European ceramics and has a sleek, modernist design and abstract decoration. He worked alone, producing hundreds of different models for the tourist, homeware and giftware market, evolving his style over the twenty-one years the pottery was in operation. Ross Waterman in his article Discovering Gunda (Craft Victoria, 2008) identifies five different styles of decoration: Brownware, Blackware, Earthware, Lusterware and Caramelware. All work is incised 'Gunda' on the base, usually, but not always, with a model number. (CC BY NC SA Judith Pearce.)
