Shirley Storey

Shirley Storey (nee Birkit) was born in 1927. She has entries in the 1973-1988 directories where she is based in Deakin, ACT. She began pottery in her second year at East Sydney Technical College after trying out other crafts like weaving and silk screen printing. She taught full-time at the Canberra Technical College from September 1951 to September 1956. In her early practice, she made earthenware plates and bowls with sgraffito patterns or overlapping glazes suggesting nearby landscapes and mountain ranges. By the time of her entry in the 1973 directory, she was making domestic stoneware and large unglazed pots fired in a gas kiln. She became a member of the Bimbimbi Ceramic Study Group when it was set up in 1974 . Her mark is a painted 'SS' with one S below the other.
