Smith, Ian

Ian Smith (1948- ) trained in the UK as an electrical engineer and also studied ceramics at the Kensington College of Further Education in London from 1969-71. Influenced by UK potters Lucie Rie, Dan Arbeid, Bernard Leach and Michael Cardew, he maintained his interest in ceramics when he came to Australia in 1971 to take up an engineering position in Sydney. In 1987, he moved to the Blue Mountains with artist Ann Smith and together they opened the Falls Gallery in Wentworth in 1991. After refreshing his skills through a Penrith TAFE ceramics course in 1992, and training with a local potter, he began exhibiting finely detailed works incised 'IS'.
