John Elischer

Elischer, Elischer Creations, Elischer Australia, NCP and National Ceramic Products are marks found in various forms on slipcast ware made at the Melbourne-based National Ceramics Products pottery operated by John Wally Elischer (1924- ) from 1947-1987. The full set of marks with dates of use can be found in Geoff Ford's Encyclopaedia of Australian Potters' Marks. John Wally's father, the sculptor John Wolfgang Elischer (1891-1966), sculptured a variety of animals that were slipcast first by the Cooper & Cook Pottery in Glenhuntly in the late 1930s and 1940s, and then by National Ceramic Products. These are signed with a painted 'Elischer'. The other marks are embossed, printed or impressed and several paper labels were also used. The pottery was sold to Peter Gillon in 1987 and amalgamated with Peter McEwin's PNA Pottery in 1994, thereafter trading as G.M. Ceramics until 2002.
