Don James (1922-?) worked at the Benwerrin Potters' Studio in Gilberton, SA, in 1969. He was president of the SA Studio Potters' Club from 1974-1976 and set up the D.J. Pottery at McLaren Vale, SA, in 1977. He made functional stoneware and decorative wheel-thrown forms using local materials and also designed and made ceramic bottles for the local wine industry. Shirley Clare worked with him for a time when she moved to McLaren Vale in 1986. In that year, he exhibited "slender, elegant bottle forms with dry glaze and clay-sprigging techniques" at a Studio Potters' Club Gold Medal Award event at L'Unique in Adelaide. He was still potting in 2004 when he exhibited three raku pieces at the Studio Potters' club's Encore '04. Work may be marked 'Don James' (painted or incised), 'Don James Australia' (incised) or 'DJ' (incised).
