Trevor Pitt is a South Australian potter who has been practicing professionally in Mt Gambier since the late 1970s. He makes mainly wheel-thrown pots sealed with glaze inside and dry-glazed on the outside with colours sprayed or brushed on using porcelain slip, oxides, ceramic stains and, sometimes, gold lustre. Following a study tour in Japan in 1982, he developed a way of applying iron oxide brushwork to produce cascade and strata effects that simulate the forceful and restful states of the sea. Recent works explore these states through altered rims, translucent slips or marked and carved surfaces. Early work has an oxide stamp reading 'Pitt Original Australian Pottery'. A paper label on vases with glazes made from Mt Schank rock reads 'Mt Gambier Pottery Trevor Pitt. The Claypitt - his current business name - was registered in 1995. Work from this date is marked with another oxide stamp - 'The Claypitt Original Australian Pottery' - with 'TPitt' and the date incised or printed inside. Work made in the late 1990s and 2000s may just be incised 'TPitt Australia'.
