DeBoos, Janet

Melbourne-born Janet DeBoos (1948- ) completed a Bachelor of Science at Sydney University. then a Ceramic Certificate at East Sydney Technical College in 1971. During the 1970s, she taught in various institutions in Sydney and Canberra, before becoming a full-time potter in 1981. She moved first to Yass, NSW, then to Wee Jasper, where, at the Brindabella Pottery, she and Michael Wignall made a range of boxed domestic ware and held annual residential workshops. By 1996, she had moved the pottery to Tanja, NSW. In 1998 she was appointed Head of the Canberra School of Art, where she had been lecturing part-time since 1985. She has published a number of books, including Glazes for Australian Potters (1978) and Handbook for Australian Potters (1984). She has entries in the 1977-1996 potters' directories and articles in Pottery in Australia. Her interest in functional forms and their context over time is reflected in recent work. Her personal signature is an incised 'DeBoos'. Early works may be impressed 'JD'. From 1982-1999, Brindabella Pottery items are impressed 'JDB' with an outline of hills in a semicircle above.
