Peter Travis (1929-2016) was born in Manly, NSW. He studied sculpture, ceramics and industrial design at East Sydney Technical College, completing the new Ceramics Certificate there in 1964 and setting up a studio in Glebe. Equally well-known as a colour consultant, kite maker and designer, his ceramic work took the form of distinctive architectural sculptures and some thrown forms with oxide, manganese or iron glazes. He was one of eight Australian artists exhibiting at the International Academy of Ceramics Exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London in 1972 and was subsequently elected a titular member of the academy. He continued to work in clay until the late 1970s, using a painted 'Peter Travis' or 'Travis' as his mark. In 2008, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his outstanding contribution to the visual arts, crafts, design and art education.
