Jo Caddy

Jo Caddy was born in Washington, USA, in 1916 and trained as an artist at the Vancouver School of Art in Canada in the 1930s. . Coming to Australia in 1951, she settled first in Tasmania then moved to Adelaide in 1957 where she took up a posiition as a lecturer at the South Australian School of Art from 1958-1964. Her friendship there with fellow expatriate Alex Leckie stimulated an interest in sculptural ceramics which she pursued from 1972 onwards from her studio in the Adelaide Hills near Magill. Her terracotta and stoneware head pots reflect her skill as a portrait artist, for which she won the Portia Geach Memorial Award in 1967. Her ceramic work may be marked with a painted 'J' in a circle.
