Jan Gluch (1919-1969) was born in Poland but moved to Denmark with his parents in 1930. He was apprenticed for five years in a Danish factory, making mostly ceramic objects, and was factory foreman at Copenhagen Pottery before setting up his own pottery making parts for porcelain dolls. In 1957, he migrated to Sydney with his family, working at Pates while living at the Villawood migrant hostel, then renting Easton's Pottery at Willoughby, and making works for Kalmar. In 1960, he moved to Brookvale and set up his own pottery making mainly souvenir ware and selling through a wholesaler. In 1963, he made the transition to studio pottery. He set up a pottery school at Brookvale and continued there until 1967, when he moved to Blaxland in the Blue Mountains. Souvenir work may have a black underglaze stamp with 'Gluch', 'Gluch Australia' or 'Australia' under the image of a Viking helmet and he also used an incised 'J Gluch' or 'Jan Gluch'. His son Ivan Gluch is also a potter.
