Janna Ferris trained as a potter with Fran Ifould in 1978, then set up her own workshop at Longueville, NSW, in 1979. After completing a Diploma in Ceramics at East Sydney Technical College in 1982, she began specialising in earthenware tableware decorated with underglaze stains in a style influenced by the patterns on old china, cottage garden flowers, and the works of Clarice Cliff, Dorothy Haffner, Patsy Hely and the painter Margaret Preston. By 1990 she was based at the Ross Street Potters' Workshop in Glebe, where she collaborated with Ivan Gluch on a series of tableware commissions. After furthering her studies, she has now moved to Tanja on the far south coast of NSW, where she now woodfires her work in a kiln built with the help of Yuri Wiedenhofer. Work may be signed with an incised 'Janna Ferris' or 'J. Ferris'
