Andrew Robbins

Andrew Robbins began potting in 1976 after leaving the navy. Mainly self-taught, he set up a pottery business in a converted stable at Bulls Hill, a property owned by his family in Bossley Park, west of Sydney. The business was a branch of Wal. Robbins and Co, Builders which still trades. The family opened a gallery on the property in 1979 and also had a small gallery in Manly for some time. At its height, the business had five throwers, several decorators and 14 staff making slipcast ware. After a major fire in 1983, Robbins moved to Dubbo, NSW, in 1984 and set up the Yarrabar Pottery there. His mother continued to run the Bulls Hill Pottery until 1991 and the Yarrabar Pottery traded until 1998, with Robbins' wife Fay as workshop manager and the main thrower. Bulls Hill Pottery and Yarrabar Pottery work is marked with the full name of the pottery in various forms. Robbins' own works are painted 'AR' or 'Andrew Robbins'.
