Ben Richardson (1951- ) was born in Hobart, Tasmania. He completed a Bachelor of Economics at the University of Tasmania in 1972 before becoming interested in ceramics, which he studied at the Tasmanian School of Art in Hobart from 1978-81. Starting out with raku, he was converted to working with local materials and firing with wood by Col Levy, Les Blakebrough and Gwyn Hanssen Pigott, who conducted a woodfiring workshop he attended in 1980. In 1982, he set up the Ridgeline Pottery at Sandford, where he still lives and works, teaching two days a week at TAFE. He was a part-time lecturer in ceramics at the School of Art from 1985-95, and a researcher in the development of Southern Ice porcelain from 1995-97. In 2004, he completed a Master of Art, Design and Environment degree and, in the same year, participated in an international woodfiring workshop and conference in the United States. His work is marked with an impressed 'BR'.
