Jeff Sosower

Jeff Sosower first studied pottery at Georgia State University in 1970, and honed his skills over the years through classes while working in business and law. In 1986, he migrated to Australia and started making and selling pottery at the Paddington Market in Sydney. Moving to Coffs Harbour a few years' later, he set up the Southern Cross Pottery with Stephen Prince and John Mawhinney, making domestic stoneware in a style similar to Marianne Cole's Outback range. Products were sold from a studio and showroom at Boambee, and to retail outlets around Australia. Later, he worked with Martin Gill at Kangaroo Point Terra Cotta , a trademark now owned by Southern Cross Pottery. In 2000, he started specialising in gravity fed stoneware water purifiers, employing piece throwers to make the wares and marketing them under the Southern Cross Pottery label. Production line works are impressed or stamped 'Southern Cross Pottery' and may also be signed with the maker's incised signature. Sosower's own works are incised 'Jeff Sosower'.
