Pates Pottery

Pates Pottery (1946-1980) was set up by Alfred James Pate (1917-1986) at Belmore, NSW, with the help of his brother John and nephew Ron. Pate had learnt the pottery trade at Fowlers Pottery in Marrickville. Targeting a working class market, and employing over 100 workers in its heyday in the 1950s, the company made a range of colourful slipcast domestic wares. It also supplied raw materials to other companies through its CESCO subsidiary. Marks used by the company over time are illustrated in Geoff Ford's Encyclopaedia of Australian potters' marks. The closing date is from Dorothy Johnston's The people's potteries (Ford says 1973).
