Peter Ries trained at the East Sydney Technical College (now the National Art School) in the late 1970s or early 1980s. After graduating, he started specialising in reduced pigment lustre ceramics on earthenware clay forms. He uses a gas-fired kiln and glazes and pigments he has developed himself but in other respects follows traditional Islamic techniques. His brushwork is reminiscent of the floral decoration in medieval manuscript painting. He obtained a Master's Degree in Visual Arts at Monash University in the mid 1990s under Owen Rye, and also has a Graduate Diploma in Education from The University of Melbourne. His pottery is based at Toongabbie in Gippsland, Victoria, and in 2011, he was teaching at the Gippsland Grammar senior school. His works are incised 'P. Ries'.
