McWhinney, Bruce

Bruce McWhinney (1952- ) trained as an interior designer but moved to clay in 1976, working for several years with John Goldfinch in Dural, NSW, and completing his formal training with a Ceramics Post- Certificate course at East Sydney Technical College in 1980. As a student he was interested in woodfiring, but ended up specialising in tableware design, studying with Wedgwood and David Queensberry in England. He also made low-fired constructivist work, holding his first sculptural exhibition at Mura Clay Gallery in 1992. After teaching part-time for a number of years, he became a full-time teacher at Brookvale TAFE in 1989, and took up the position of Head of Ceramics at the Northern Beaches TAFE in 2002. Recently, he has renewed his interest in woodfiring, and also organises tours and workshops to Japan. His exhibition work is signed 'McWhinney' or 'Bruce McWhinney'. His tableware has an impressed 'BW' which looks like a 'B', next to an impressed house motif.
