Kypridakis, Ben

Ben Kypridakis (1932- ) was born in Sacramento, California. After serving in Korea he studied painting and ceramics at the University of Iowa, completing a masters degree in 1962. In 1963, Adelaide's Kym Bonython gave Kypridakis his first exhibition in Australia. He then returned to America to teach at the California State University in Sacramento. Ten years later, he returned to Adelaide, working as an art consultant to TAFE and then as a lecturer at North Adelaide School of Art. In 1995 he gave up teaching to focus on his work. From 1984-1998, he sold his work mainly through Raglan Gallery in Manly, NSW, but now exhibits in Adelaide and displays and sells work from his home studio in Brompton, SA. He makes elegant thrown stoneware and porcelain vessels and platters with lustrous surface finishes, decorating some with decals or multiple transfers in a baroque painting style. He signs his work with an incised 'Kypridakis' and the date.
