Manchester, Margot

Margot Manchester trained as a nurse but became interested in pottery through adult education classes in 1974. She completed a Certificate in Ceramics at Launceston TAFE in 1978 and a Diploma in Fine Art from the Tasmanian CAE, Launceston in 1982. By 1981, she had set up a studio in Launceston, specialising in local stoneware and porecelain bodies with natural rock glazes. She held her first solo exhibition at Coughton Galleries, Hobart, in early 1985. While completing postgraduate studies the following year, she began to move away from functional to sculptural forms, using colour, textural effects, incisions, folds and extrusions of clay. After 17 years as a professional ceramic artist, she became interested in digital photography and creative writing, and is now an author and a member of the Australian Photographic Society, living and working in Ulverstone. She has entries in the 1981 and 1985-1988 directories and signed her ceramic works with her incised name or an impressed 'MM'.
