Hedley Potts studied ceramics at RMIT in the early 1960s. In 1974, he received an Australian Council Crafts Board grant to study overseas, and was visiting artist, Goldsmith's College, University of London, in 1979. In the1981, 1985 and 1988 potters' directories, he is working as a senior lecturer in ceramics at Monash University's Gippsland Campus. In 1995, he was appointed artist in residence at Kingston Arts Centre in Moorabbin. He was one of the artists represented in the Ceramics Victoria Inc 40th Anniversary exhibition in 2009. In the catalogue he says he is operating from a Ceramic Co- op studio in Moorabbin, manly producing non-functional work ranging from life-size figures to tiny medallions, and including pavements and murals. He incises his works 'Hedley Potts'.
