Tappin, Peter

Peter Tappin (1941- ) was a Brisbane potter who taught himself to throw in the early 1980s after a career in advertising and garden nursery management. He set up a studio and gallery, The Mango Tree, in Wellington Point, moving to Carina by 1986, then to the Burrum Pottery at Beerburrum on the Sunshine Coast, where he continued to make pottery until 1994. He experimented with local materials for his body and glazes, perfecting a copper glaze with a blackened metallic effect, a malachite green glaze, based on chromium and tin, and a method of decoration on unglazed stoneware bands, using wood and leather carving tools . His work, which is impressed 'Peter Tappin'. was available for sale in the Queensland Art Gallery and the Potters' Gallery in Brisbane during the 1980s.
