Florenz Pottery

Florenz Pottery (1934-1980) was established by Florence Williams, who began making pottery in the 1930s in an old stable in Marrickville, Sydney. Three years after her death in 1948, her husband sold the pottery to Johann Harves and Max Archer. In 1962 the works were relocated to Brookvale. Although the company changed hands several times over the next eighteen years, Harves, who had emigrated to Australia from Germany after the war (and later his son Peter) had a major role in the management of the pottery until its closure In 1980. A number of studio potters worked at Florenz for a time, including Harry Memmott, Andrew Halford, Lino Alvarez and Diogenes Farri. After the pottery closed, Peter Harves started the Coolangatta Pottery near Nowra, NSW.
