Nell and Robert McCredie

Nell McCredie (1901-1968) was born in Sydney. She obtained a degree in architecture from the University of Sydney, then spent six years as a consulting architect in Queensland from 1924-1930, where she also studied pottery under L.J. Harvey. On her return to Sydney, she taught pottery at the YWCA, opening a city depot in George Street in 1933, but firing her work, and the work of students, at her home in Epping. In 1933 or 1934 her brother Bob (Robert) McCredie (1910-1995) joined her. Together they made domestic ware for supply to gift shops and restaurants, with Robert playing a major role in commercialising the pottery and designing, making and selling the pottery's production line wares. Nell also made one-off pieces, winning the Arts & Crafts Society's Elizabeth Soderberg Memorial Award for pottery in 1947 and 1951. After Nell died in 1968, Robert continued to operate the pottery until he retired in 1974. He continued to work as a craftsman, creating furniture mainly from Red Cedar until his death in 1995. Production line works are incised 'McCredie N.S.W' and Nell and Robert also had their own marks, 'NMC Epping N.S.W.' and 'RMC'.
