Helen Laycock (1931-2011) became interested in pottery in 1956. In 1960, she and her husband Peter began selling pottery at Clifton Pugh's art colony 'Dunmoochin' at Cottles Bridge just outside Melbourne. In 1965, the couple built their own studio at Dunmoochin not far from fellow potter Alma Shanahan. In 1970, Sue Ford published a photographic record of the Laycocks at work, Fire and clay: the craft of Helen and Peter Laycock. Peter is still based at Dunmoochin in his entry in the 1974 potters' directory but, soon after, the couple separated, with Helen continuing to work as a potter at the Dunmoochin property until 1987, and to live there until 2001. Her works are painted or incised 'Helen' or 'Helen Laycock'.
